The "old school" that advocates spanking is wrong, wrong and wrong.

Spanking is a gut response to anger. It has nothing to do with discipline, all it does is teach children that violence is an acceptable form of behavior.

We all know that the occasional swat on the backside is probably not going to have any long term serious effects on the child but the issue is that teaching children that violence is acceptable is dead wrong and that's what spanking does.
